Summer is coming to a close as Labor Day weekend arrives, and so, our look back at the television talk show genre must come to a close as well. We saved the best for last in many ways - Dinah!, the great 1970s syndicated talk show starring the great Dinah Shore is our featured tribute video today. Dinah! ran in syndication from September 9, 1974 to September 7, 1979, and was followed by Dinah and Friends, which ran one season from September 10, 1979 to September 5, 1980. Prior to Dinah!, Ms. Shore had a first run at the talk show process with her equally successful Dinah's Place, which ran from August 3, 1970 to July 26, 1974. So, in many ways, Dinah had her talk show in some format throughout the entire decade - a very impressive accomplishment. Her career was remarkable, including a singing and recording career in the 1940 and 1950s, and her Dinah Shore Chevy Television series from the early 1950s into the early 1960s. She continued her television work on cable during the 1980s. One of the truly great ladies of television, and a woman we all love and have paid tribute to earlier this year here at Television Vanguard in 2016, in this year in which we celebrate the 100th anniversary of her birth. This video clip is a special find - it is included in the Billy Crystal DVD cable television movie *61, which takes a fascinating look back at the New York Yankees 1961 season in which Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris battled it out for the American League home run championship and the great Babe Ruth's single season home run record as the Yankees pushed towards the World Series showdown with Frank Robinson and the Cincinnati Reds. The movie (and DVD - amazon.com) is well worth viewing and owning for any fan of baseball, the Yankees, Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris. The Dinah! episode shown here features Billy Crystal, Mickey Mantle, Bert Convy and Dinah. The date of this show's episode is August 26, 1977. Special note - as exciting as it must have been for Billy Crystal to be on the show with Mickey Mantle, it may have been nearly as exciting for fellow guest Bert Convy. Convey played professional baseball himself, in the Philadelphia Phillies organization prior to moving into the television industry. Enjoy! This video clip is presented here on YouTube for the entertainment and informational value of the viewer, and no copyright infringement is intended. Editor's note: Fall's autumn leaves will soon be upon us, which must mean the broadcast television season will soon be upon us as well. We'll be featuring our tribute to the 50th anniversary of the 1966 to 1967 broadcast television season beginning on Monday evening. More details coming this Sunday. Stay tuned!
