The white-tailed deer is one of the most iconic animals living in the Riviera Maya. Here at Sandos Caracol Eco Experience Resort, we have a spacious on-site habitat for white-tailed deer where you can stop by and see these graceful and beautiful creatures. White-tailed deer are a common sight here in the jungles of the Riviera Maya, adding a peaceful atmosphere to the lush surroundings of this fascinating destination. The back of the white-tailed deer is a reddish color in the summer, and grayish brown in the winter. Its belly has a white color, along with the underside of its tail. When it's alarmed, the deer raises its tail to show the white side as a warning signal to other deer. The white-tailed deer is a medium-sized deer: the males weigh 130 – 350 pounds, and the females weigh 90 – 230 pounds, while northern-region white-tailed deer tend to be larger than their relatives to the south. Only the males have horns, and these come off in the winter. Their diet changes depending on their habitat and the season. They feed mostly on grass, plants and leaves in the spring and summer; corn, acorns and other nuts in the fall; and buds and branches in the winter.
