A team of young volcanologists led by Yves Moussallam at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego spent more than four months trekking to 15 South American volcanoes, getting as close as they dared to sample gases like the ones that created Earth's atmosphere and made life on Earth possible. The Trail by Fire expedition drove the entire route in a mobile volcano observatory filled with instruments, flew drones into volcanic craters, and hiked over fields of toxic gas-spewing fumaroles.
